{"id":78,"date":"2010-10-26T07:55:59","date_gmt":"2010-10-26T14:55:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amstcommunitystudies.org\/?p=78"},"modified":"2014-03-11T20:13:49","modified_gmt":"2014-03-12T03:13:49","slug":"ed-orser-retirement-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amstcommunitystudies.org\/?p=78","title":{"rendered":"Ed Orser Retirement Party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Department of American Studies at UMBC is hosting a special event to honor Dr. Ed Orser, who retired in August after over 40 exemplary years at UMBC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ed Orser Retirement Party<br \/>\nThursday, November 11 from 7-10pm<br \/>\nSkylight Lounge<br \/>\nUMBC<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p><strong>Please R.S.V.P to Carol Harmon<br \/>\n(410) 455-2106 <\/strong>or<strong> harmon@umbc.edu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><strong>This event is the Kickoff of the Ed Orser Endowment Fund<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In honor of Dr. Orser\u2019s extraordinary contributions to the department and university, the American Studies Department plans to endow the Orser Center for the Study of Place, Community, and Culture to continue the work Dr. Orser pioneered.\u00a0 Endowing the Center requires that we initially raise a minimum of $25,000, and we hope to raise considerably more than that in the years ahead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Dr. Orser was a founding member of the Department of American Studies.\u00a0 He helped to build the Department\u2019s curriculum from the ground up, mentored many faculty members, won both the Presidential and Regents\u2019 awards for teaching excellence, and served as chair for many years.\u00a0 He is a leading scholar in urban and community studies, as evidenced by his 1994 book,<em> Blockbusting in Baltimore: The Edmondson Village Story<\/em>, a classic study of the dynamics of racial change in a city neighborhood.\u00a0 As a public intellectual mindful of the need to inform civic discourse, Dr. Orser has consistently translated his scholarship into accessible and popular exhibits, teaching materials, films, public lectures, and community projects.
